Prochaine journée thématique : Conservation en haute mer : de nouveaux défis pour les sciences politiques et océaniques.

Nous avons le plaisir de vous inviter à participer à l'atelier « Conservation in the high seas: emerging challenges in political and marine sciences » qui aura lieu jeudi 13 juin 2019 au Museum d'Histoire Naturelle à Paris. Loin des côtes et des eaux nationales, comment définir des frontières fixes pour les aires marines protégées en tenant compte de la variabilité des courants, du changement climatique, mais également des contraintes géopolitiques et juridiques ? La journée s'inscrit dans le contexte des négociations internationales "BBNJ" (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) qui donneront un cadre légal à la gestion et la conservation en haute mer. 

Cette journée est co-organisée par l'IPSL et l'Iddri, en partenariat avec le Cnes et le Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, avec le soutien du Ministère de la Transition Écologique et Solidaire. Elle accueillera des chercheurs et des experts français et internationaux, et se tiendra en français et en anglais. 

Résumé introductif : The immense water volumes of the high seas are largely responsible for the ocean role in climate regulation, represent an important reserve of planetary unexploited resources, and contain a remarkable patrimony of biodiversity. The international community committed to conserve and sustainably use this part of the planet and recently launched negotiations for an international treaty covering areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ), under the auspices of the UN. 
However, when moving the attention from the coast to the high seas, specific challenges arise. In contrast to the fixed topographical features of the coast, open ocean biogeography and ecosystem services are mainly tied to physical features like fronts and current systems, whose spatial range of variability, drifts under climate variability, and biophysical function, is not a trivial task. Other challenges arise in political sciences. Policies in the open ocean are not the competence of a single nation, but often framed by a complex and fast evolving multi-jurisdictional system, which involves multiple actors. Motivations behind political action are diverse, ranging from conservation to food security and extension of geopolitical influence.
